Four Tips to Help Administer Pills To Your Pet Cat

One of the most common questions that pet owners have is how to administer pills to their cats safely. It can be quite a challenge if you've ever tried to give your cat a pill. Cats are notoriously independent, and they don't always take kindly to being handled by their owners. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best method may vary depending on the size and temperament of your cat. However, a few general tips can help make the process go smoothly.

  1. Pill Gun Or Pill Popper

One option is to use a pill gun or pill popper. These tools allow you to place the pill at the back of your cat's mouth and then fire it into their throat. They are available at many pet supply stores and online and are especially great for pets who won't swallow pills independently. Remember not to use force. Cats don't respond well to force, and if you try to hold them down and shove a pill in their mouth, you may find yourself with a few scratches and no pill.

  1. Towel

One of the most effective methods is to wrap your cat in a towel. This will help to keep them calm and still, making it easier to slip the pill into their mouth. With a bit of patience, you should be able to give them their medication without any problem.

  1. Tasty Treats

One of the best ways to safely administer pills to your cat is by using tasty treats. Most cats love the taste of tuna, cheese, and other flavorful snacks so you can use these foods to your advantage. Simply hide the pill inside a small piece of tuna or cheese, and your cat will gobble it up without even realizing that there's medication hidden inside.

  1. Pill Pockets

You can also purchase special pill pockets at your local pet store. These treats are designed specifically for holding pills, and they come in a variety of flavors that your cat is sure to love. Watch until you know your cat is comfortable taking treats from your hand.

If all else fails, ask for help from your vet. Ask your vet to show you how to give pills at your check-ups. Many vets will be happy to demonstrate the technique, especially if they know you're struggling.
